ACP strives to minimize negative impacts on the environment and promote sustainability at its Internal Medicine Meeting. Efforts by ACP and its site partner at the 2026 Internal Medicine Meeting include:
- Eliminating or significantly reducing printed materials such as the Scientific Program, newspaper, handouts, brochures and other materials and offering digital materials and electronic delivery of information.
- Shuttle Company, SEAT Planners, includes carbon offset contribution to Bonneville Environmental Foundation to offset the CO2 generated by the shuttle buses by creating responsive and credible climate solutions.
- All meeting badge lanyards are made from recycled plastic.
- Eliminating previous meeting offerings such as tote bags.
- When feasible, retaining signage for future meetings.
- San Francisco’s Moscone Center:
- Is LEED Platinum Certified by the US Green Building Council.
- Has had solar power on site since the 1990s. Recent expansion of the center includes the largest solar installation by area in the city. Spanning two roofs, it consists of approximately 2,600 photovoltaic (PV) modules. The system’s capacity is 687 kw.
- Water reclamation: in Moscone North and South buildings, the facility's drainage system is now designed to collect and treat over 15 million gallons of groundwater for reuse in plumbing, landscape irrigation and street cleaning, unburdening the city’s sewer system.
- Recycling: Beginning in 1998 with diversion of high volume materials from the exhibit floor and lobby areas, Moscone set the standard to convention center recycling. The program today targets materials from all areas and sources. Nearly 2 million pounds is diverted annually, with nearly 20% of that total redirected as donations to local area non-profits.
- Compost and food waste: Moscone’s newest program is capturing all food material as well as compostable serveware and utensils from all concession and catering locations throughout Moscone North, South, and West.
